The 2018 NBA Finals started off with an incredible, drama-filled contest between the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers, a game that the Dubs would have to wait until overtime in to finally run up the score on their rival. The Cavs, led by a 51-point effort from superstar LeBron James, couldn’t overcome George Hill’s bricked free throw with the score tied in the waning moments, a heartbreaking miss that was immediately compounded by J.R. Smith’s head-scratching decision to run out the clock upon snaring the offensive rebound. The refs didn’t provide much assistance to Cleveland during the team’s gutsy Game 1 upset attempt, botching a number of calls—something confirmed by the league’s last two minute officiating report—and giving Golden State a huge advantage in judgment decisions, none more impactful than reversing Kevin Durant’s charge to a blocking foul on LeBron after a review. The Cavaliers were emotionally depleted by the time the extra period came about and simply ran out of gas in the final five minutes, scoring just seven points against 17 from their foe to ultimately lose 124-114.

Despite Cleveland’s valiant effort in the opener, oddsmakers once again opened the club as a double-digit underdog for Game 2. The spread is nearly the same as Game 1, with the Cavs getting 11.5 points tonight—compared to 12.5 on Thursday—which gives a clear indication of how Vegas feels about this loaded Warriors squad. The reigning champs are now an overwhelming favorite to defend their title and win their third Larry O’Brien Trophy in four years, getting a bump from -750 before Game 1’s tip all the way up to -1700 for the series in the wake of their first victory. That means bettors would have to risk a whopping $17 to win a single dollar on a Golden State championship, while Cavs backers would net $11 for each $1 wagered on the team coming back to win the title at +1100 odds.
